How we actually test a game before writing

March 15, 2026 · Mateusz Kowalski

People sometimes assume reviewers get a quick look and dash off an opinion. That's not how we work, and honestly it would show if we did.

We install the full game and play it the way a normal person would, over several days. First impressions matter, but so does whether a game still feels good on day four when the novelty wears off.

We test on a mid-range phone on purpose. A game that only shines on the latest hardware isn't much use to most readers, so battery drain, heat, and frame drops all end up in our notes.

We also try to reach a natural stopping point rather than a scripted one. If a game has a story, we finish it. If it's endless, we play until we understand its rhythm and whether it stays fun or gets grindy.

Only then does someone sit down to write. The goal is a review that reflects living with the game, not glancing at it.
